In accordance with the spirit of Interim Implementation Measures of the Regulations on Academic Degrees of the People’s Republic of China and other documents of our university, the following requirements are put forward for the graduate students who will take part in the thesis defense in Winter 2023. Please follow the requirements and work flow in the notice to process relevant work.
I. Qualification of Applying for a Degree
The candidate must pass all the courses required by the training program, pass the thesis proposal and pass the professional practice assessment so as to apply for a dissertation defense with the consent of the supervisor and the department / institute / center.
Application Procedure:
After passing the general assessment of the training program, MPH candidatescan submit application for a defense. Then the supervisor should review his/her completion of the training program, write detailed academic comments on his/her dissertation, and give advice on whether to approve the dissertation for review and defense. After the chairman of Department / Institute / Center review and sign the advice, the dissertation is then submitted to the College Degree Evaluation Subcommittee for approval.
II. General Work Arrangement
MPH degree is conferred to those who meet the basic requirements for degree application, obtain required credits after completing courses, and pass the professional practice assessment.Meanwhile the student shouldpass the defense of the dissertation, andbeapproved by the College Degree Evaluation Sub-Committee, the Degree Evaluation Committee of Health Science Center, and Peking University Degree Evaluation Committee in sequence.
Those who fail to pass the professional practice assessment,fail to pass the dissertation review and blind review, fail to pass the defense by the vote of the Defense Committee and subcommittee andanyother review procedures will be givenonly one chance to restudy the professional practice or modify the dissertation within one year and resubmit it for degree application.
Ⅲ. Pre-defense Work
According to《beat365官方网站研究生学位论文过程管理办法Measures for the process management of Graduate Dissertations of the school of public health of Peking University》, for all degree candidates, it is necessary to complete the pre-defense of dissertation, and only those who pass the pre-defense can apply for the (official) defense of dissertation (including bilnd review and others).
①The pre-defenseshouldbe applied by degree candidates and organized by supervisors.The pre-defenseshouldbe conducted at least 3 months prior to the dissertation defense.
②Application Procedure
After completing the writing of the dissertation, the degree candidatesshouldapply for pre-defense with the consent of the supervisor and the Department / Institute / center. At least 7 working days before the day for pre-defense, degree candidates need to fill in the table 1 to table 5 in the pre-defense form of the graduation thesis of the master's degree of Peking University Health Science Center (see attachment 606-Pre-defense form of the graduation thesis of the master.docx) and upload the related informationin the "graduate comprehensive service system of PKUHSC". After passing the review, the forms hould be used at the pre-defensemeeting. After the completion of the pre-defense, degree candidates need to fill in the table 6 and table 7 in the pre-defense form of the graduation thesis of the master's degree of Peking University Health Science Center and upload the related information in the system. (details about system filling process will be notified separately).
③The composition and responsibilityof the pre-defense committee
The committee is generally organized by 3-5 associate professors orhigher rank or experts with equivalent titles. The candidate’s supervisor can attend the meeting, but cannot serve as a member of the Pre-defense Committee.
Responsibilities of the pre-defense committee: strictly review the master's degree thesis from the aspects of thesis topic selection, literature review, innovation and writing normsandput forward specific modification suggestions for the deficiencies and problems existing in the thesis.The committee should strictly control the quality of the thesis.
④Requirements for pre-defense
At least 7 days before the pre-defense,thesis title, student name, supervisor, members of Pre-defense Committee, the time and location of the defense should be announced to the Teaching Affairs Office byemail. The scene of thepre-defense should be photographed. The pre-defense should generally be conducted in public (except for confidentiality), and detailed records should be documented.
The student reports about his/her dissertation (at least 30 mins).
⑤Pre-defense results:
The Pre-defense Committee should conduct anonymous voting whetherthe student pass the pre-defense.And the results are divided into "agree to apply for defense", "apply for defense after modification" and "disagree to apply for defense". The resolution should be adopted only with the consent of more than two-thirds of all the members. If more than two-thirds of thememberswho choose "agree to apply for defense" and "apply for defense after modification", students can apply for blind review without modifying or modifying the thesis under the guidance of the supervisor, it is "passed". Otherwise, it will be deemed as failure, and it is required to reapply for the pre-defense of the dissertation before the next defense (generally 6 months later).
After deliberation, the Pre-defense Review Committee will give the final result, which is divided into "agree to apply for defense", "apply for defense after modification" and "disagree to apply for defense".
Pre-defense results include: pass and fail.
Pass: to submit the dissertation for blind review;
Fail: the student should revise his/her thesis for no less than six months under the guidance of the supervisor and to defend the dissertation again after an overall revision and approval of the supervisor.
Please complete the pre-defense work of your dissertation before September 1 2023 and submit the pre-defense form of the graduation thesis of the master's degree of Peking UniversityHealth Science Center with all required signaturesto the Teaching Affairs Office byemail before September 15 2023.
IV.Blind Review of Thesis and Plagiarism checking
1. Blind Review of Thesis
After student pass the pre-defense,students can apply forblind review. The school should carry out the blind review of thesis. The electronic file of thesis (PDF file, named after “11001_student ID_Thesis”, all supervisors’ and students’ names in the thesis are removed, and the specialty name is reserved) should be submitted to the Teaching Affairs Office before the deadline (September 15th 2024). Generally, the review work for master students will be complete within 30 working days. School will try the best to communicate with the platform to reduce the time for review. The review results and specific commentsshouldbe summarized and feed back to students and supervisors by email. Those who have passed the review must modify the thesis according to the expert's opinions, and can apply for defense after being approved by the supervisor.
2. Blind review rules:
① The review results are divided into "A. Agree to defend the thesis", "B.Basically agree to reply after slight modification" and "C.Major modification, re-submission for blind review anddefendthethesis after passing" and "D. Do not agree with the defense"
② Preliminary evaluation stage: 2 experts for each student.
• If the expert's comment is "A. Agree to defend the thesis",and there is no "Poor" comment on the sub item "innovation", that means students have passed the review.
• If the expert's comment is "B. Slightly modified", and there is no "Poor" comment on the sub item "innovation", students should make modifications according to the expert's comments and reply after being reviewed and approved by the supervisor.
• If the expert review opinion is "C. Major modification", and there is no "Poor" comment on each sub item or there is only "Poor" comment on the sub item "writing standard", the thesis needs to be blind reviewed again. The student should carefully modify the degree thesis according to the expert opinions and complete Thesis Revision Form (attachment 0505-Thesis Revision Form update.doc). The supervisor should carefully review the revised thesis and modification instructions, and sign for approval. After being reviewed and approved by the degree branch, itshouldbe resubmitted for approval. The resubmission time and the number of experts should be comprehensively determined by the degree branch according to the evaluation opinions.
•If the evaluation opinion is one of the following circumstances, the degree applicant should carefully modify the thesis according to the expert opinion, the modification time should not be less than three months, and write a written modification description. The supervisor should carefully review the revised thesis and modification instructions and sign for approval. After being reviewed and approved by the degree branch, it should be resubmitted for approval. The number of experts resubmitted for blind review should not be less than 3, and the submission method should be the same as that for the first time.
1) If the expert's comment is "A. Agree to defend the thesis" or "B. Slightly modified", but there is "Poor" comment on the sub item " innovation";
2) If the expert review opinion is "C. Major modification", and there are "poor" comments on other items except "writing standard";
3) If the conclusion of one expert review opinion is "D. Do not agree with the defense".
•If there are two or more "D. Do not agree with the defense" in the conclusion of the review opinions, the degree applicant should carefully modify the thesis according to the expert opinions, and the modification time should not be less than six months, and complete Thesis Revision Form (attachment 0505-Thesis Revision Form update.doc).The supervisor should carefully review the revised thesis and modification instructions , and sign for approval. After being reviewed and approved by the degree branch, it should be resubmitted for approval. The number of experts resubmitted for blind review should not be less than 3, and the submission method should be the same as that for the first time.
If you need to be blind reviewed again,the revised thesis will be resubmitted to the experts for review, which generally takes 30 working days. Please submit thefollowing materials to the Teaching Affairs Office: Thesis Revision Form (attachment 0505-Thesis Revision Form update.doc), Information Registration Form (attachment 0101-Information Registration Form.xlsx), and electronic file of revised thesis (PDF file, named after “11001_student ID_Thesis”) . Please submit it in time, so as not to affect the defense because the review cannot be completed.
③For the dissertation submitted for review again, if the evaluation opinion is one of the following circumstances, the defense application will not be passed.
1)If the expert's comment is "A. Agree to defend the thesis"or"B. Slightly modified",butthere is "Poor" comment on the sub item " innovation";
2)If the expert review opinion is "C. Major modification";
3)If the expert review opinion is"D. Do not agree with the defense".
Applicant is allowed to revise the dissertation within one year and have only one chance to reapply the defense. Usually, the next submission for blind review is on March 15th 2024.
④Before all the comments are returned, the degree applicant should not defend his/her thesis. After the blind review is passed, the supervisor will organize the defense. It is students’responsibility to contact your supervisor and schedule the defense (day and time). The Deadline to defend the thesis is by November 20th 2023.
3. Plagiarism checking
The school would conduct plagiarism checking for the dissertation at the same time. The results will be feed back to students and supervisors as soon as possibleby email. If the duplicate checking rate is higher than university recommended standards (15%), please revise it under the guidance of the supervisors. Before submitting an application for defense, plagiarism checking should be conducted again by yourself and submit the revised thesis and the duplicate check report (duplicate checking rate should be lower than university recommended standards) to the Teaching Affairs Office.
Ⅴ. Pay special attention:
1. Please complete the pre-defense work of your dissertation before September 8 2023 and submit the pre-defense form of the graduation thesis of the master's degree of Peking UniversityHealth Science Center with all required signaturesto the Teaching Affairs Office byemail before September 15 2023.
2. Please submit the thesis and other materials according to the time requirements. Those who fail to submit within the time limit (before September 15th 2023) should be disqualified from the degree application qualification.
3. The thesis you submitted should be the final version and approved by your supervisor. If not, you won’t get chance to change, and your uncompleted thesis will go into plagiarism check and blind review which cause your failure in either step of plagiarism check or blind review.
4. Please change the thesis format for blind review complying with the following requirement:
1) students should follow the Basic Requirements and Writing Format for Postgraduate Dissertation in Peking University(Guidelines for Writing Postgraduate Dissertation, see attachment0404-Guidelines for Writing Postgraduate Dissertation2017.docx)
2) it should be in PDF format with cover page for blind review;
3) your name, student ID and supervisor’s name should not be showed in your any parts of thesis;
4) delete the part of “Acknowledgements , epilogue or explanations”.
5. The procedure of applying for defense in the graduate education management system should be notified separately.
Ⅵ. Before September 15 2023,students should send the following materials to the Teaching Affairs Office (gwjb@bjmu.edu.cn).

Please make sure your thesis is scheduled early enough in the semester to allow you to complete the requirements.It is the student’s responsibility to submit materials to the department, schooland college in time for the supervisor, chair and dean to review them so they can reach theGraduate Schoolby the deadline.
